3 Tips to Help You Get the Most Out of Your Day Spa Appointment

Spas are a great place where you can escape and get pampered for a day. However, your day might not be all you want it to be if you don’t know the proper etiquette for day spas. Before booking a day spa appointment, understand these tips so you can get the most out of your trip.

Book in advance

Booking a day spa appointment should be done as far in advance as possible because appointment times tend to fill up quickly. If you want to go when the spa is not very busy, off-peak hours work the best. These include early mornings during the week. Try to avoid booking a day spa appointment on a Saturday if you want to dodge the crowds.

Get there early

If you arrive at your day resort appointment late, then your time for treatments will be shortened. This means your time in the massage room, sauna, or steam room won’t be as long as you booked it for. This is because these things are usually booked all day, so your massage therapist will have another appointment after yours. Some experts even suggest getting to the spa 15 to 30 minutes early so you can adapt to the spa’s environment before your appointment.

Have the proper attire

You will be provided with a bathrobe, slippers, and a towel when you get to the spa, but you can bring your own if that’s more comfortable. Make sure you wear something that is easy to slip off so you can fully enjoy the experience at the spa. If you want to take advantage of other amenities like the pool or the gym, bring the proper clothing for that. It might also be a good idea to bring a change of clothes for after your appointment, depending on your plans for when you leave the resort.

Roughly 72% of people said they went to a spa to get a massage in the last 12 months was for medical reasons (43%) or stress relief (29%), according to a survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association. No matter what your reason is for booking a day spa appointment, make sure you follow these tips so you can get the most out of your experience.

5 Benefits of Massage for Seniors

As we age, our bodies change, and it’s not always for the better. Here are some ways massage can benefit aging people and improve the condition of their bodies and lives.

Better sleep

One of the first benefits of massage for seniors is that it improves their sleep. According to the American Senior Communities, seniors who receive a massage every week report that they sleep deeper and longer than those who do not get weekly massages. This is because massage promotes relaxation, which can help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

Quicker healing

Seniors who invest in day spa packages that offer massage typically heal quicker from injuries than those who don’t. First, one of the benefits of massage is that it can stimulate the nervous system. This releases endorphins, hormones, and neurotransmitters that help the body heal. A massage also helps loosen up tight muscles and improve range of motion so you are less injury-prone in the long run.

Restored mobility

There are many illnesses that can lead to a lack of mobility for seniors. These include things like Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and many forms are arthritis. Massage helps increase blood flow and reduces stiffness in the joints and muscles. Massage can also help improve one’s balance and postural stability, which can help someone walk and stand much easier.

Increased relaxation

Massage can help improve mental and physical relaxation. Massages are known to reduce cortisol, the “stress hormone” in the brain. This allows the body to enter a state of relaxation and rest. Massage can also help reduce a lot of pain the body experiences, which can help promote relaxation.

Softer muscles and tissues

When we age, we typically become less active. This means our muscles will harden and get tighter. This can make it hard to move and even painful to do everyday activities. Massage can loosen up tight muscles by increasing blood flow. Localized areas then improve because massage reduces muscle tension.

Stress is known as the silent killer as it is linked to six leading causes of death, including heart disease, lung ailments, liver cirrhosis, cancer, and suicide. While stress is always important to manage, it is even more important as we age. We are more susceptible to many different diseases as we age, and massage can help alleviate and reduce those risks.

Getting a massage can help relieve the muscle tension and pain you get from being at a desk all day. Massage therapy also can help get the body back in proper alignment, which helps improve posture.

Improved immune system

Massages can actually help boost your immune system. Regular massages can help increase the activity level of the white blood cells in your body that fight off viruses. This is especially beneficial for people who work in an office because they are no longer having to take time off of work for being sick. You can even avoid getting sick during cold and flu seasons when you get a regular massage.

Reduced stress

No matter what your job is, it is safe to say that you experience stress at some point. Stress can have a serious impact on your physical health, and that’s where massage comes in. Frequent massages can help reduce the major stress hormone in the brain, cortisol. High levels of cortisol are linked to high blood pressure, poor immune system function, and even obesity. Even a 15-minute massage once a week can reduce your stress symptoms.

So, what is a massage? It’s a great way to help office workers increase their productivity, improve their immune systems, decrease their back pain, and reduce their stress. What Exactly Is a Day Spa?

When you think of a spa, you probably think of massages and cucumbers on your eyes. Well, there are actually several different kinds of spas that offer different spa packages and services to their clients. What is a day spa? Let’s investigate.

Compared to other types of spas, day spas focus mostly on relaxation, well-being, beauty, health, and tranquility. According to Trip Savvy, about 80% of spas are considered day spas. Day spas put an emphasis on quiet, tranquil spaces and do their best to keep the feeling of “business” out of the facility. Guests come to get away from their every day lives for a few hours, so a day spa typically feels like an escape.

Day spas offer a variety of services, and the services offered depends on each facility. Typically, however, day spas offer things like facials, massages, manicures/pedicures, aromatherapy, stone massage, reflexology, and mud wraps. Many day spas are also a part of larger day resort where services like hair, yoga, tai chi, life coaching, nutritional services, and even dining. These treatments are not meant to show long-term results, but they will rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul.

The staff at a day spa provide a very laid back environment, so they are often not required to have any kind of licensed medical training. For spas that offer medical skin treatments, they need the proper certification, but those services are not offered at day spas. The cosmetic services offered at a day spa do not require licenses, but most aestheticians and massages therapist at day spas still obtain a license.

When you go to a day spa, you will typically receive a robe, slippers, tea, water, fruits, nuts, and access to locker rooms, the resting area, and more. Other types of spas usually do not offer amenities like these.

In 2016 alone, more than 179 million Americans visited spas due to an increased focus on wellness. This focus has continued through today, so more and more people are visiting spas. Are you still asking yourself, “What is a day spa?” Come book an appointment with us and we’ll show you just how relaxing a day spa can be!

4 Signs You’ve Found a Good Day Spa

Day spas are incredibly beneficial for anyone looking to relax, relieve pain and stress, and everything in between. Finding a good day spa is a little more challenging than you might think because you want to make sure your experience will be a great one. Here are some signs that you’ve found a good day spa and it’s time to book an appointment.

The staff is welcoming

The spa’s staff are the ones that will be servicing you for most of your experience, so you want to make sure they are welcoming and comforting. This will greatly impact the atmosphere and your experience. You want them to make you feel relaxed, friendly, and zen. If the staff does not make you feel like you’re at a spa, then you’re probably at the wrong one.

They offer a variety of services

Look over what spa packages the facility offers before you book your appointment. You want to make sure they have what you want. Do you want a massage, to sit in a steam room, relax in a sauna, or get a facial? Maybe you want a little bit of everything. You can often find these resources on the website, or you can call the facility to ask questions over the phone.

They are licensed and registered

Although there are no universal codes or regulations for day spas, the owners and sometimes the employees must pass background checks, undergo health inspections, and are licensed and registered for the procedures that they perform. The state attorney general’s website will typically have this information.

The facility is very clean

This may sound obvious, but the implications of an unsanitary facility are more than just “gross.” Bacteria, germs, and other pathogens can lead to infections for spa-goers. You can check out pictures of the spa or even visit the facility before your appointment to check the place out.

Stress is known as a silent killer as 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. Going to a day resort can combat those problems, so finding a good day spa is essential. You want to make sure they have a good staff, many options, they are licensed, and they are clean. If the spa seems to meet your criteria, go ahead and treat yourself.

What’s The Difference Between Steam Rooms and Saunas?

Going to a spa resort is a great way to relieve stress and have a day full of relaxation. America is on a health kick recently it seems, and that is certainly helping the spa business. In fact, this recent focus on health led over 179 million people in the United States to visit spas in the year 2016.

People go to the spa for many reasons. Massages, facials, and body treatments are just some of the packages that are available for spa patrons to enjoy. Saunas and steam rooms are also very popular commodities that spas often offer. What’s the difference between the two, you ask? Here are the main factors that differentiate steam rooms and saunas.

Dry Versus Wet Heat

The biggest difference between steam rooms and saunas is whether or not the room is moist. Saunas are traditionally dry. Rocks are heated up to create the warm temperatures in the room. Water can be poured over the rocks to create steam, but the humidity levels reach nowhere near those of a steam room. Steam rooms have a machine known as a steam generator that boils water into steam and releases it into the air. Steam rooms are not ventilated like saunas are, so they are much more humid.

Various Temperature

The temperatures vary from a sauna to a steam room. According to Live Strong, a sauna will usually be set between 160 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit, with a humidity level of 5% to 30%. Steam rooms, on the other hand, are set to 110 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, but with 100% humidity. Both allow the body to sweat out toxins, it just depends on what the desired temperature is.

What You Sit On

Due to the variance in humidity levels, the materials used in the rooms are different. Saunas typically use wood materials for their benches because metal or tile would get too hot and could burn skin. Wood absorbs moisture, which not only keeps the surfaces cooler but also helps pull humidity out of the air. Wood, however, cannot be used in steam rooms due to the humidity. The wood could warp and degrade very quickly. Therefore materials like tile are typically used in steam rooms.

Saunas and steam rooms are similar, but they certainly have their differences. Whether you go to the spa for a massage or to sweat it out, you will feel like a million bucks after your session.
